If MadCatz sticks seem expensive, try the HRAP4 Kai, my stick. If you are considering getting a stick, MadCatz and Hori have the stuff for you, though there are other pretty good sticks out there not manufactured by them.

So I'd generally reccomend a stick, but feel free to play with a controller as well. But then after contemplating if I should go a step above and buy a stick for myself, I was glad I did, and I ditched my controller right then and there. I was able to manage as Rashid in SFV and pull off not-too-shabby Terry combos in KOF '98.
Joystick motions were a lot easier, especially when you needed to do SPDs. I had actually started off with buying a controller and it was a big improvement from a keyboard.

But with a stick, all the buttons are laid out on a single plane, giving you much more freedom to execute different moves plus the buttons are bigger and therefore easier to press. With buttons, controllers usually have fierce punch and roundhouse kick buttons on the LB and RB bumpers, making for a pretty odd layout. Execution with a joystick rather than with a thumbpad will help you a lot more, since you don't have to worry about your fingers slipping off and you have much more precision. Both controllers are used by pros and there's really no discrimination of each, but many people shoot for a stick because their button layout is tailor made for fighting games.
